Hot springs: rules and relaxation

Japan has many volcanoes, so you can bathe in hot springs all over the country. Some inns sit deep in the mountains and others stand in the middle of town, and they are used by many people all year round.

Before getting into the bath, the first rule is to wash your body clean. Not putting your towel into the tub and not talking loudly are also said to be important manners.

The water temperature differs from place to place, so people say it is best to enter slowly, starting with your feet. Staying in too long can make you feel unwell, so make time to rest and drink some water.

In an open-air bath called a "rotenburo", you can soak in the water while looking at the scenery. Many people feel that sitting in hot water on a snowy night is something special.

After leaving the bath, quite a few people rest slowly in a room with tatami mats. A hot spring can be called a place that rests not only the body but even the mind.
