A research group at a university has announced that, in a survey of students, reading time outside class averaged only about twenty minutes a day.

According to the survey, about half of all students answered that they "hardly read books at all", and the most common reasons given were "no time" and "not knowing what to read".

On the other hand, if time spent reading e-books or articles on smartphones is included, the time students spend with written text itself is not thought to have fallen greatly.

A faculty member involved in the survey said, "What matters is not making reading a duty, but increasing the doorways into interest."

Having received the results, the university says it plans to increase library programmes that introduce books to students.
